Tracing its roots back to the community libraries of the early 1890's, today's Miami-Dade Public Library System has grown to include a Main Library, 33 branches and bookmobiles which serve neighborhoods countywide. Almost two million people living in the special taxing district have access to over four million volumes, representing 850,000 titles. Electronic databases supplement the printed resources. The Connections (books-by-mail) and Talking Books Programs provide services to the elderly, homebound, and visually impaired. Literacy and early childhood programs also target special needs groups. The Miami-Dade Public Library System pursues its mission to provide for the informational, educational, and recreational needs of our diverse community. The Library System is a depository for Federal, State of Florida, and local municipal government publications. Special collections include African-American History and Culture, Floridiana (including the Romer photograph collection), Genealogy (with a complete set of the U.S. Census from 1790 to 1920), Merrett Stierheim Urban Affairs Collection (public administration), and Children’s Literature. The System also has an extensive Spanish language collection and purchases materials in a wide variety of other languages. |

Patrons who live in the library's special taxing district may obtain library cards by presenting personal identification and proof of address. Those who live outside the district may obtain cards for an annual fee of $50. Library cards are needed to borrow library material and for remote access to some of the library's databases. Most library items are checked out for 28 days. Videos and high demand items circulate for seven days.
